Who is Lex?

Alexcia is a military service member and self-taught published pro makeup artist who has been featured in several magazines, tv productions,  and even ESPN. She is an entrepreneur with a passion for creation. For her, being a makeup artist has to be the best position to meet diverse groups of people, transforming faces, and empowering her clients with confidence! You will most likely find her exploring the world for its beautiful wonders elbow deep in makeup, a self-professed “beauty junkie” as she continues to search for the “must have” beauty products and techniques.

When and where did your love for makeup come from?

My love for makeup started back in high school in Texas. I was a part of my school’s dance team and we would have to do our own makeup for performances, competitions, etc. Every game night or performance, we would be in the locker room struggling with navy blue, silver and white eyeshadow with red lipstick— which, looking back at it now, who told us that was cute! Being able to help everyone get their makeup together for big events is what led me to become more artistically intrigued by the beauty service industry.

What’s one of your specialties when it comes to make up?

When it comes to makeup, bridal glams are my absolute favorite— starting from the beginning with bridal consultations, to the day of the wedding and the bride seeing the final result as the wedding day jitters are finally setting. It’s something about a subtle soft timeless look that I love so much for my bridal clients that really brings the entire process together.

How can make up empower women?

Naturally, I feel every woman is beautiful in their own skin. They should learn to love themselves naturally. Makeup is an enhancement of the beautiful features you already have. I want every woman to know that she is beautiful, irreplaceable and that she blesses this world with her unique beauty! Whether it is a full face, a little, or no makeup, if the person feels good about it, then it is enough. The most exciting aspect of learning the steps of makeup is that there is no wrong way to do it. For me and so many others, it is an extension of our personality, another way to share who we are with the world.

What are some of your types for women of color who are just getting started in doing their own makeup?

For anyone getting into makeup, you don’t really understand how costly this business can be and the tendency to buy the name brands because we feel we will be able to achieve looks because of the cost of the product. WRONG! You can still achieve these same looks with drugstore brands too. Brands I recommend are Maybelline, NYX Cosmetics, Juvias Place, and Beauty Bakery.

What are some of your favorite makeup brands?

Let’s talk about brands!

NARS, Too Faced, Fenty Beauty, and Anastasia Beverly Hills are brands throughout my entire kit. I can honestly recommend products from each of them!

What are some issues you see that non-black MUA’s have when doing women of color makeup?

For MUA’s that don’t specialize in people of color, the foundation matching seems to be the issue most clients tend to deal with. We all have different undertones in our skin like yellow, blue, red, etc. So just one foundation will not match. When customizing foundations, I tend to use 2-3 different shades to achieve the client’s foundation shade exactly.

What does being an MUA mean to you?

You have to love what makeup can say and what it can do. You love that makeup can express how someone feels without them having to say a single word or that it has the power to bring out the confidence and beauty in anyone. The ability to read situations well, knowing when to take the lead and when to step back because you’ll encounter many different kinds of clients as a makeup artist, each with their own individual needs. Some clients may give hardly any direction for the makeup look they want, while others will be very particular. Being open to learning new techniques and trends will keep your clients coming back and continue to open doors for you.
