An Exclusive Q&A with J. Brown

J. Brown, has cultivated a unique sound that continues to shock the world! Brown began his musical career at the age of eight years old with the help of his mother. She encouraged him to join the church choir and after years of singing, Brown’s passion grew. His outstanding vocal talents stood out from the rest to where he was offered to regularly perform at the Pistons and Lions games in his home city. Brown’s voice opened doors that he could never have fathomed. When he graduated from high school he was granted a full academic scholarship to Grambling State University. This is where his passion for music became his profession!
Brown was exposed to a variation of music such as Bell Biv Devoe, Jon. B, Mint Condition, Brian McKnight, Usher, Jay-Z, Jimi Hendrix, Nas and Sting which helped him during his creative process. After college, Brown signed with Universal Republic Records, and released ‘Imma Love You Right’ and ‘Sex On My Money ft. Gucci Mane. This led to Brown creating his own top ten UAC Billboard hits “Give It 2 U”, “Sunrise Sunset”, “Moon” and “Vibe”. The evolution of J. Brown continues.
Let’s get exclusive with J. Brown!
Q: So you reside in California?
J.Brown: Yes, but I was born & raised in Detroit.
Q: Wow ok cool, I was too, so do you plan on moving back?
J.Brown: Oh no! I appreciate what Detroit had to offer but I won’t, Detroit will always be home though.
Q: Lol ok, I feel you! So you just dropped an album?
J.Brown: Yes I did this is my first album and I’m proud of my project, which is titled Chapter & Verse.
Q: Wow, that is dope! So how did you find out you had a gift to sing?
J.Brown: I always knew I could sing and would enjoy singing, I performed a lot with artists in Detroit. I didn’t have anyone to push me into music. I just believed in myself.
Q: What artist inspired you to become a singer?
J.Brown: Oh wow, that’s a good question! I would say Tank & James Brown.
Q: What is the biggest obstacle to being an artist?
J.Brown: Just being comfortable with who I am and learning my lane as an artist.
Q: Have you always wanted to be an RnB singer?
J.Brown: Yes, always!
Q: Who are a few artists you would want to perform with?
J.Brown: Oh yeah, just to name a few Eric Benét, Darnell Jones, and Raheem.
Q: Wow yes, those are some great choices! So you spoke about not having a lot of support in your musical career, did that affect you at all?
J.Brown: No, actually not. I just had to find my lane and become versatile as an artist.
Q: Who are a few artists that you would want to do music with in the future?
J.Brown: I would love to do music with Jill Scott, D’Angelo, and baby face just to name a few.
Q: What have you learned in the creative process of your musical career?
J.Brown: Well I always wanted to be an R&B singer, just staying in my lane and being consistent.
