Edwin Spence a native of Jamaica Queens, New York who resides in Maryland has everyone talking about his new single “Have more faith” Edwin who is a musician, song writer, manager and a buyer of a music store has learned to trust and depend on God through tests and trials which has caused him to have more faith.
Edwin, how did you get started in the music industry?
I started out in church. We had an old Story & Clark piano. The musician that played for us left and I had a fascination for pianos so I would jump on and play doing service and they would kick me off. One of my friends gave me a piano lesson on the song “When We All Get to Heaven” in the key of E flat so one Sunday when the organist wasn’t there, they asked me to play. It was in the right key, and I was able to play, and I never looked back from there. After that I took some private and professional lessons and started producing and writing songs.
When did you start writing songs?
I started writing in late 88 and 89 writing about my feelings I wrote a song for New York State Mass Choir which I wrote three songs for them during that time “Take My Life” was the title cut but doing the process of life you get married have children and if you don’t get rich quick or become a star you lose interest in writing. So, I would sort of go back and forth but I never stop loving writing. I couldn’t get anything done until recently when everything started clicking then I said you know what I’m back.
What inspired you to write “Have More Faith”
As a child we didn’t have much and I noticed that a lot of church people would say things but weren’t living what they were saying, the bible says “faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen” but I noticed people don’t really exercise faith. People now have jobs, doctors and they live based on their means. When I started watching people, I noticed that people don’t operate on faith but common sense. I decided I would trust God and when I started trusting God, I saw different results.
What are some of the challenges you have faced in the music industry?
One of the biggest challenges I face is that because of my position I’m able to meet people that most people would just dream of. For example, I have Stevie Wonder’s personal cell phone number in my phone. You kind of get an assumption about them. One thing that’s negative is when you spend time with Timberland for example, and you’re in his studio in Miami where you’re at such a high level of production that when you come home you get intimidated hanging with Stevie Wonder and you’re like how will my music ever sound like this and it freezes you. You must face your own fears and finish what you start. You can purchase his new single on his website https://edwinspence.com/music and let your faith work for you.
