Getting on The Red Carpet with Ariana

Tell us a little bit about you and how you got your start in PR?
During my tenure at Hampton University, is when I discovered my passion and love for public relations. I applied for an internship at BET and the rest was history. Widely known for my top tier clients, I have worked with major networks and organizations including; Warner Brothers, BET, NAACP, TV One, UNCF and more. In order to succeed in the public relations industry, it’s important to be multifaceted. Bold, professional, and charismatic, I am taking over the industry one project at a time.
What is the significance of the red carpet? Why should rising stars aim to get on one?
The significance of having a red carpet and a step-and-repeat is for branding purposes. This is typically where celebrities walk the red carpet and the media conducts their interviews. Having your logo and branding displayed on the step and repeat will only optimize and increase your brand awareness.
Is there such a thing as red carpet etiquette that talent and or managers should be aware of?
The only advice that I would give as far as carpet etiquette is to arrive early. I like my client to speak to all outlets no matter how big or small. Many times smaller or urban outlets get ignored.
And it’s always good to show love and to send a thank you note to the event organizers once the event is finished.
Is there anything someone can do to try to get onto a red carpet?
I would strongly recommend hiring a publicist. I think a lot of the times people think they need to be on a red carpet when actually they don’t need to be— no shade intended. People walk the carpet when they have something that they would like to promote.
Also it depends on the carpet. Everyone wants to be at the world premiere of a movie screening but you first need to ask yourself: why do you deserve to be there? Were you a part of the cast or crew? Do you have a large social following that will benefit the studio if you attended and took content on the carpet? If the answers were no – then you probably don’t need to be at that event.
Anyone can get a red carpet for their event, but ask yourself why you want to be on one.
We typically see the glamorous photos and outfits on a red carpet. What is happening behind the scenes on a red carpet?
Behind the scenes is madness. Publicists and managers are trying to get their clients interviewed, celebrities are taking pictures and grabbing content, people are socializing, attendees are talking and catching up. It can be quite hectic. It can also be fun, but very overwhelming depending on how large the carpet is.
A red carpet is perfect for networking, but it’s important to also remember why you are there. As long as you take advantage of the opportunity and use it to your advantage, then it is a night well spent.
