Jameson Bostic is a New York Native who resides in Denver Colorado. Jameson was ranked in the WBC after defeating WBC 12th-ranked Japanese boxer Yuzo Kiyota. He has a total of 23 wins and 5 losses which were only technical losses. While Jameson was being successful in the boxing arena his personal life was taking some heavy punches.
Jameson, how did you get started in boxing?
I was with a close friend of the family that was a professional trainer at Bedside General in Brooklyn. I was always doing music, or some type of sports and he asked me to try out boxing. My initial reaction was that boxing is for idiots. I was more of a square nerdy kid so that type of activity was nothing I could fathom doing. But after going through school, which I was good at, high school didn’t make sense. I started flunking out of classes, losing privileges like band practices and sports. I didn’t want to work for anybody, I didn’t want to be a doctor or anything like that. It was either sports or music. He always kept asking me to try boxing and I said alright I’ll try this thing out.
When you had your first fight how did you feel?
I had a running bet who would get the first knock out for my first fight. For my amateur fight my grandparents were driving me to my first fight. I was listening to a lot of Brian Mcknight I was nervous and chewing gum. I just kind of went through it. Once you get in the ring it’s just like sparring, I thrived off the energy from everything when it came to a fight, from people who are with you and those that are against you just name it. I was used to entertainment. I did entertainment through music and sports. I was always used to being in front of people performing. It was just a different stage.
What did you do after boxing?
I had a daughter. I decided I was going to get a job. I decided I was going to be a dad. I went to work at Babies R Us Store. I was all excited. I was wearing a tie. I was like how do you get a raise? It was like a raise of 37 cents a year. I was like whoa this is the wrong job. I had no idea about working. I did that for a few months and that didn’t work out. So, I started working at Dish Network and made great money but found out that move was lateral. I couldn’t go vertical because I didn’t have a college degree or things of that nature.
How did that work for you?
I began to think about how I can become self-employed again, so I started selling insurance. I was the best insurance agent in Colorado. I got promoted and after I got promoted, I got bored. So, I happened to get on LinkedIn and there was a guy named Frankie Cole who had a gym called Confusion. He said I see you are an instructor. Would you be interested in teaching some classes? I said OK, I will try it out. I also had a friend who was begging me to come to his gym and train. I had the Jones I wanted to be back in boxing. I intern for him for about year and then I started my own business #Just Punch in 2016 and I started doing meditation.
How did you get into meditation?
I splattered myself on the wall about five years ago I was caught in an O.J Simpson experience minus the murder minus all the jazz I was caught in infidelity with my fiancé at that time I got in the thin line of love and hate stuff. She was a woman scorned and wanted to put me in a lot of pain. Through that pain I ran into a domestic violence case. I ended up losing my business running into the whole white supremacy black hole I ran into. I ended up doing seven months in the county jail, no priors, none of the above. What I went through was mostly reflected on me. I spent a lot of time blaming white supremacy but, when I got on the other side, I realized it was all the same and I had to look at myself. I gave these people bullets to shoot myself with.
After Jameson was released from jail, he started Zen Meditation which is considered “open-monitoring meditation” where monitoring skills are used. Jameson admits he had some anger management issues and through meditation he’s able to control his anger and live a productive life.
