This summer the Hollywood Bowl is celebrating its 100-year anniversary. On July 11, 1922, the Los Angeles Philharmonic performed its first summer concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Plans for the anniversary celebration were delayed last year due to the pandemic.
As part of the celebration, the L.A. Phil published the coffee table book, “Hollywood Bowl: The First 100 Years,” including historic photos and stories and a seven LP collection of 100 years of recordings from the Hollywood Bowl. There’s also a 10-episode podcast series featuring stories drawn from oral history interviews and documents.
This year, the Bowl continues its tradition of presenting musicians and artists from a variety of backgrounds. Some highlights of this summer’s concerts include:
Friday, July 29: Boyz II Men and TLC
Wednesday, August 3: Sheryl Crow and Keb’Mo’
Wednesday, August 10: Trombone Shorty’s Voodoo Threauxdown
Friday August 19/Saturday August 20: The Gipsy Kings
Wednesday, August 24: Black Movie Soundtrack IV with Orchestra
Friday August 26/Saturday August 27: Diana Ross
Sunday August 28: Smooth Summer Jazz with George Benson
Friday September 2/Saturday September 3: Maestro at the Movies with John Williams
Thursday September 8: Wynton Marsalis’ All Rise
Sunday September 11: Reggae Night XX
Sunday September 18: Grace Jones
Wednesday September 28: Herbie Hancock
“The Hollywood Bowl is a magical place,” said Maestro Thomas Wilkins, Principal Conductor for the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra since 2014. “Watching the audience react to the orchestra and all of the Bowl’s guest performers is amazing.”
In addition to a fabulous summer concert lineup, the Bowl is also celebrating the 15th anniversary their Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) program. The program provides youth from five through eighteen years of age free instruments, music instruction and opportunities to perform locally and around the world. “We offer training five days a week for more than 1,500 students in LA County,” said Renae Williams Niles, Chief Content and Engagement Officer of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. Niles helped launch the new Judith and Thomas L. Beckman YOLA Center last fall in Inglewood. The site serves as a gathering space for YOLA students. Niles is also planning a huge Rock My Soul: Celebrating Black Women Artists in Collaboration and Community” festival at Walt Disney Concert Hall this fall featuring a concert with Chaka Khan.
One of the best ways to enjoy a Hollywood Bowl concert is to indulge in Chef Suzanne Goin and restaurateur Caroline Styne’s many food options. Choose from three restaurants and three marketplaces, pre-ordered picnic baskets, as well as gourmet delicious dishes for Terrace and Garden boxes at the Bowl. Wine aficionados can also indulge in the Bowl’s Winemaker Wednesdays and Sunday Market Tastings complimentary wine tastings at The Plaza Marketplace with guest winemakers.
“Our goal at the Hollywood Bowl is to provide a true restaurant experience throughout the entire venue, from our Wine Bar to the Backyard to Supper in Your Seats. We source the same locally grown, organic produce and prepare everything just as we do at our Los Angeles restaurant locations. Suzanne and her team of chefs are so talented and passionate, and I think it really shows on the plate,” said Caroline Styne, co-owner and wine director of The Lucques Group.
The Hollywood Bowl is a perfect spot for a summer date, family gathering to share a concert, or group night out under the stars. Tickets and full summer concert schedule at https://www.hollywoodbowl.com.
