Tell us about you, your position in medicine and background
I am a Board-certified Anesthesiologist and I work in private practice. I have been practicing for the last 5 years and recently relocated to Chicago with my family in November.

What does it mean to you to be a black professional in the field of medicine? Why do we need more black representation in medicine?
Cultural competency is more important than we realize. Currently, Blacks make up about 13% of the US population but, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, only 5% of practicing medical doctors are black.  When my patients see me as a black man, I think they immediately feel more comfortable sharing sensitive health information, are more trusting and are more open to receiving medical advice.

What’s one of your most favorite aspects in your position that you look forward to?
The best part of my job is taking care of people during one of the most vulnerable moments in their lives- before, during and after surgery. Anesthesia is an exciting and rewarding field and I am passionate about patient safety. I am a social media ambassador for the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation and believe vigilance, attention to detail and evidence-based medicine are fundamental in care delivery.

For other African Americans looking to get into medicine regardless of role, what advice would you give them?
My advice is to always aim for excellence. There are so many great medical jobs within the healthcare industry which is the largest and fastest-growing sector in the United States, accounting for about 14% of all US workers.  A great deal of satisfaction comes from knowing that you are one of the best in whatever position you choose. Not only that, but also our patients deserve our very best.
