What made you want to get into acting?

I always liked acting, but I wasn’t exactly sure. In high school, I was in Romeo and Juliet and loved it. Acting was an extension of myself, and I wanted to find other ways to express myself.

What does it take to be an actor?

Integrity is really important in acting. And willingness and being open to fail and learn. Ability to trust yourself and your team.

Any tips for aspiring Actors?

It’s important to commit and have patience, and network. Go to other shows, introduce yourself, email casting directors. Have determination. Work boxoffice, work backstage, get to know people so they get to know you and you can shop them for your work.

What resources would you suggest in San Diego?

San Diego auditions. They have general auditions online, but you have to be a member online. Globe theatre, San Diego Rep, Cygnet theatre. And introduce yourself.

What’s your favorite play/musical? Any recommendations?

That’s a great question… I think it’s gonna have to be Cabaret. I think it’s a really beautiful story about humanity. As long as there’s ignorance in the world, there’s going to be the need to learn of the dangers of ignorance. I recommend anything from Checkov, August Wilson, and Tony Kushner.

How has Covid changed the industry?

I think it’s sadly gotten harder. I speak for myself when I say there’s a real determination for people who haven’t, to get their moment (color-blind casting). It is allowing us to be more radical on who we bring into the room (casting).

I know you have many skills, would you have any advice on gaining skills and managing time?: Two things. One– know how to prioritize what matters to me and two– what needs to get done. Do the work that’s gonna get you ahead. Prioritize yourself, what you need and not be afraid to ask.

Anything you would like to add?

Theatre is having a great change, we’re trying to have more accountability. Have patience and love for what you do and what you do will give you love back.
