It’s easy to get swept up in all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood events, but have you ever thought about who puts those soirees together? William P. Miller is the design maven behind William P. Miller Special Events, what he refers to as a “one-stop shop” for everything you need to plan and execute the event of your dreams.

Even before the birth of his business, Miller’s passion for event planning was undeniable. During his tenure at United Airlines, he was already putting together birthday parties and baby showers for his friends and family. After the devastating events of 9/11 had upended Miller’s career, he had to make a choice; go back to what he knew or start on a different path. He made the bold decision to launch his own event planning business, but the road to success wasn’t without its trials.

“When you look at the special events industry, a lot of the leaders at the time were pretty much white and female, then you had the white males, and then there were a few black females, and so the black men were the bottom of the totem pole,” said Miller. Even now, some people are still hesitant to give black event planners the respect and credit they’re due.

“As a black event professional in general, we’re not necessarily awarded the biggest contracts, or people might want to subcontract, or they may not want to pay us as much as they’re willing to pay other people,” said Miller. Despite these hurdles, he persisted and word started to spread. As he silently took over the industry, his peers dubbed him “The Quiet Storm” to pay tribute to the immense success he found despite never really promoting his business.

Today, he continues to build his dynasty and expand his services, like his unique line of candles, Opulent Scented Moments, releasing several new fragrances this month. Miller even does custom linens and stationery for his events, proving that small, personal touches make all the difference.

“That’s what really gets me excited,” said Miller. “When I’m able to personalize the event and also personalize the guest experience. I think it was Maya Angelou that said, ‘people will never forget how you made them feel.'”

For many, the 2021 holiday season will be their first time reuniting with family since the pandemic began. Miller dropped some gems for those aiming to give their gathering that distinctive Hollywood flair.

For a fall and winter refresh, he suggests swapping your light summer linens for heavier fabrics that could add some texture to your decor, like a rich velvet or suede. He also recommends layering and creating height using napkins, centerpieces, or varying sizes of candles to make a more dynamic dining experience. Miller predicts neutral earth tones, emerald green, and hints of copper will be popular colors this season.

While it’s nice to keep up with the trends, Miller’s number one tip going into the holidays isn’t about the decor at all.

“This is an opportunity to focus on the attitude of gratitude,” said Miller. “Speaking from the heart and having meaningful conversations, meaningful fellowship time. That’s what’s really important.”

When in doubt, always keep Miller’s philosophy in mind. Your event is about more than just throwing a party; it’s about creating moments that people will cherish for a lifetime.
